One of the few remaining traditional British pubs left in London (and we intend to stay that way), the Morpeth Arms is a pub built in 1845 on the site of the original prison cells of Millbank Penitentiary, which is now home to the art museum Tate Britain.
The Morpeth Arms is part of a great line up of buildings along historic Millbank in Westminster, neighbouring Millbank Tower, Thames House and directly opposite MI6.
The pub is rumoured to be haunted by prisoners and prison staff from the Penitentiary. Pop in and see if you can see the ghost on our live CCTV feed of our spooky cellar!
No traditional pub would be complete without an amazing drinks selection! The best kept cask ales, a wonderful wine list to suit everyone’s palate and some supreme spirits to tempt your taste buds. Joined on the bar with delicious draught and craft beers & lagers, there is something for everyone at the Morpeth Arms. Don’t take my word for it, come in and try for yourself and if you get stuck, ask one of the team for their favourites.
Not all is what it seems on the surface at the Morpeth Arms. Lurking beneath the pub in our basement is a corridor of holding cells that are rumoured to be haunted by prisoners and prison workers from the nearby Millbank Penitentiary. Prisoners were led from their cells through underground tunnels to the lock up underneath the pub, where they were kept whilst they waited to board convict ships or the floating prisons, ready to take them to the land down under! #oldschoolpunishment #moderndaytreat
Ever heard the term POM? Wondered what it actually means? We have heard loads of explanations, but the one we like and believe to be true is P.O.M- Prisoner of Millbank. The Morpeth Arms, a place to drink, a place to eat and a place steeped in history! #morethanjustapub
